Position Overview: CommUnity Crisis Services and Food Bank is hiring Crisis
Helpline Counselors to provide crisis counseling, crisis screening, and suicide
intervention to clients via chat, text, and phone platforms. Crisis counseling
involves using active listening and empathy-based skills systems to meet the
client's emotional needs for the short term. We are currently hiring counselors to work primarily on an LGBTQ+ youth-focused crisis line through 988.
Successful completion of CommUnity’s Crisis Intervention Training and the Applied
Suicide Intervention Skills Training is required after hire.
NOTE: Only candidates residing in Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Missouri, Nebraska, Florida, Virginia, and Maryland are eligible for this role.

Desired experience or qualifications
- Previous experience in crisis intervention and/or other human services
- Comfort in using web-based software
- Strong typing skills
- Ability to sit, speak, and type for long periods of time
- Spanish or other non-English proficiency a plus
- Candidates must be able to train for 2 days on-site in Iowa City. (Accommodations provided by CommUnity if necessary.) Will be remote after initial training.
Compensation
Starting at $17.00 per hour (negotiable based on prior work experience)
