Context:
Established in 1951, IOM is a Related Organization of the United Nations, and as the leading UN agency in the field of migration, works closely with governmental, intergovernmental and non-governmental partners. IOM is dedicated to promoting humane and orderly migration for the benefit of all. It does so by providing services and advice to governments and migrants.
Under the overall supervision of IBM Senior Project Coordinator, the direct supervision of the Project Coordinator and Project Assistant, the incumbent will be responsible for providing cultural mediation assistance to the Irish authorities during the process of asylum application.
Core Functions / Responsibilities:
- Provide general support in the info provision to asylum seekers and any necessary activities by translating from English into beneficiaries’ mother tongue and vice versa.
- Assist in the cultural mediation activity in an objective and impartial way, according to the beneficiaries’ mother tongue.
- Contribute to identify potential vulnerable cases and signs of exploitation among the beneficiaries assisted
- Be available to travel from/to sites in the area of the assigned duty station as requested by the Project Management Team;
- Provide regular reporting as requested by the Project Management Team.
- Assist the Project Management Team with the preparation of all relevant documentation related to the project.
- Any other related task, as required.
Required Qualifications and Experience
Education
- High school Diploma.
Experience
- At least 2 years of experience in cultural mediation in the framework of migrants’ assistance.
- Previous experience with international organizations, NGOs, EU Agencies and/or Irish law enforcements or Government’s Departments would be an asset.
Skills:
- Knowledge of the procedures related to the asylum application in Ireland.
- Psychological understanding in interpersonal communication and sensitiveness in addressing the asylum-seekers’ claims.
- Capacity to prevent and mitigate conflicts between the beneficiaries/asylum-seekers and the authorities.
Languages
- Fluency in English is required
- Mother tongue in at least one of the following languages:
- Arabic (North African dialects)
